Practices That Deepen Awareness

Cultivating the consciousness of God’s presence requires intentionality. Thankfully, the Bible gives us various spiritual disciplines that help us grow in this awareness, and by intentionally integrating these practices into our daily routine, we can build a life that’s deeply rooted in fellowship with God.

The first of these disciplines is purifying our hearts, because Jesus promises us that if our hearts are pure, we’ll see God. Someone with a pure heart is honest about their weaknesses and inabilities, prioritizes faithfulness, and is focused on living in right standing with the Lord.

The second spiritual discipline we’re called to practice is reading or studying God’s Word. Scripture cleanses and conditions our thoughts and equips us with greater understanding of God’s will and ways.

Thirdly, God calls us to meditate on His Word – which is like chewing on truth and taking our time to digest it prayerfully. This practice heightens our awareness of God because it puts thoughts about Him at the forefront of our minds. Scripture begins to train us to align our attitudes and actions with God’s will, making us more attuned to His presence in our lives. If you grew up thinking meditation was weird and only for people who do yoga, ask God to change your perspective. Think about ways you might consider slowing down and practicing this spiritual discipline.

Fourthly, we’re called to pray. The consciousness of God’s presence in our lives must first become a discipline before it can be a lifestyle, and we’d do well to intentionally prioritize prayer. Even Jesus did this!

Worship is the fifth practice that helps us cultivate the consciousness of God’s presence – and worship isn’t just about singing songs in church. Jesus explains that worship isn’t confined to a specific place or time; it’s a lifestyle that flows from a heart responsive to God’s presence.

Practicing these spiritual disciplines is like tending a garden: not just planting seeds but committing to consistently weeding and watering too. The practices we’ve considered today (maintaining a pure heart, reading the Word, meditating on the Word, daily prayer, and worship) are powerful and effective ways to develop a deep and sustained awareness of God. Cultivating these disciplines requires commitment and consistency, but these lifegiving habits will draw us closer to God and yield amazing fruit. As we take on these routines, may we find our lives increasingly marked by peace, purpose, and the presence of God.
