Our wings. God's power.

Have you ever watched a bird soar? Think of a hawk or an eagle or even a vulture. What did you notice about how it used its wings?

When big birds like these fly, they need to conserve energy. Flapping their wings is arduous and burns precious calories, so they have adapted to ride thermals—warm air currents—and to use their steadied wings to hold them aloft. The birds use their own wings but the power of the wind and weather to keep them aloft.

In today’s reading, Isaiah describes the strength given to God’s people by their Creator—strength beyond what humans can provide by themselves. We will—we do!—grow tired and weary, especially in times of grief, overwhelm, or anxiety. Yet God gives strength to us. When we unfurl our spiritual wings, we are lifted by a power that comes from beyond and outside of us. With God’s care, we, too, can soar like eagles.
