God Is Greater than All Gods

Psalm 135

God is greater than all gods and it is not impossible to prove it because we can find enough Bible verses that speak about it. For Christians it is very clear, at least in theory. This is something we all know, and we are expected to also believe it. But in practice, our everyday life doesn’t always match up.

How do we see and recognize God in our lives? We may say that we have come to know God because he is our Savior. But are we truly aware that there is no one greater than him? If we know and believe that God is greater than all gods, how is it that after reading a psalm like this or after listening to a sermon that emphasizes this, we continue to live as if nothing is expected of us?! Doesn’t it matter to us? Or maybe we don’t understand?

Do we believe in God’s sovereignty when we look at the reality of the world we live in?! Wars and conflicts, pandemics and diseases, weather disasters... it seems as if everything is completely out of control. But do we believe it? Let’s stop for a moment. Let’s take a deep breath. Let us remember, like the psalmist, all that God has already done for us (Psalm 135, 4-14). This isn’t just raising awareness, or our morale, it’s an encouragement for our soul to glorify, and our whole body to turn, and worship God - who is the only and the greatest.
