Have you ever watched a scary movie or heard a scary story only to find yourself yelling at the main character (whether out loud or in your head) because you can see what is coming? You can predict that they are about to face great danger because of the choice that they are making. Reading James is a bit like that. James warns people of faith about what dangers they should avoid and what their lived-out authentic hope could look like. Some describe reading the book of James as being strictly disciplined. It’s true that James speaks directly and has no problem calling out the reader, challenging them to more honestly and completely live out their faith.

In the passage we’ll read today, James challenges his readers to meet the needs of their brothers and sisters. The implications are fairly clear: We are called as people of faith to action, not just wishful thinking. Our inaction often comes from our despair … we focus on what we can’t do and our limitations. Rather, James challenges us to focus on what we can do to help meet the needs of others. This is an abundant mindset and a generous heart at work.
