Victory and drama on the cross
With the death on the cross, God wrote the greatest story ever. Jesus died so that we can once again have a relationship with God. The symbol of this was the torn curtain in the temple. The curtain separated the Holy of Holies. That was the part of the temple where no one but the high priest had access. But this very separation, this exclusivity, was torn down. Nothing separates us from God anymore; the way to Him is open. The story of the cross is therefore not only the greatest of all stories, but also a story of freedom, hope, and light. Have you ever wondered why it is told in such a dark way? It all starts with Jesus being betrayed by one of His confidants and ends with Him dying in the cruelest way the Romans had to offer: torturously executed on the cross. In addition, He was absolutely innocent; but at the same time a murderer was set free. Perhaps worst of all, He was all alone.
However, these specific topics of the narration make us humans afraid! To be alone, to be betrayed, to be disappointed, to have pain and to die. So why does God tell this story in such a dark way?
On the cross, God shows that He does not avoid the darkness. Rather, He goes right into the darkness and confronts it. And it is precisely in this greatest darkness that the light then reveals itself. Jesus overcomes in the end. He triumphs. He also confronts all that is dark and frightening in us, up to the last and greatest enemy: death.
If a psychologist wants to help a patient overcome an issue, he will not avoid the issue in the long run. Much more, he will confront his client with the issue so that he can deal with it, whether it is a phobia or an injury.
On the cross, Jesus goes with us to our darkest points. He goes with us to our guilt, and we even see death. But then He shows us that He is greater than anything that weighs us down or holds us captive. He sets us free.
ACTION STEP
What are the dark issues in your life? Write them down and look at them in prayer with Jesus. With Jesus, you can overcome the very things you have just written down. This moment can become a real exchange at the cross. Ask Him to show you what He wants to give you instead. You give Jesus the things that weigh you down and get something new from Him.
