God’s Presence Brings Joy

Scripture:

"But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.” (Luke 2:10-11 NIV)

“You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever.” (Psalms 16:11 NLT)

"Be cheerful with joyous celebration in every season of life. Let joy overflow, for you are united with the Anointed One!" (Philippians 4:1 TPT)

"Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 NIV)

Reflection:

As we read about and reflected on previously, God is the God who is “with us” in all places and all moments. But he is also with us in all seasons of life. He is in the “good” seasons of life and even more so in those seasons where challenges present themselves. Seasons that could be filled with pain, loss, disappointment, discouragement, or other struggles. Seasons that threaten to steal our joy.

We don’t know much about the shepherds. We don’t know their names, their ages, or if they enjoyed their occupation or lot in life. What we do know is that they were in the midst of the “every day” when an angel abruptly interrupted them with an announcement.

An announcement that was GOOD NEWS! An announcement that was for ALL PEOPLE! An announcement that would cause GREAT JOY! – The Messiah, the Saviour, the long-awaited rescuer had been born.

Whether we are facing a time of great struggle or simply what feels mundane, we can remember that Jesus came to rescue us, to be with us, and to bring joy. In Psalm 16:11, He has given us a promise to show us the path of life and grant us joy in His presence. We simply need to remember to spend time in His presence.

Joy doesn’t flow when everything is as it should be. Joy flows from knowing the ONE that will be with us and will walk with us through each season of life. Joy is simply knowing and being with Him.

As an old bumper sticker slogan reminds us: “Know Jesus. Know Joy. No Jesus. No Joy.”

Allow His presence to alter your day today and fill you with joy.

Application:

What is threatening to steal your joy today? It is an overwhelming to-do list. A troubled relationship? A financial burden? A prolonged illness? Fatigue? Depression? Make a list. Write it out. Then, turn on a worship song (or 2 or 3 or more), or sit in silence and give this list to Him. Quiet your heart and whisper His name…repeatedly. Allow the Holy Spirit to fill you with His presence while enjoying His company. Ask Him to fill you with joy.

Now, make a list of things which you are grateful for. Challenge yourself to make it at least as long as (or more) than the list of things that are threatening to steal your joy. Hang this list up or tuck it into a pocket to help remind you today that He is enough in your every situation. Remember, He will be “with you” and His presence will give you joy throughout your day.

Prayer:

Father, help this moment to sink in. You are God with us, with me. Your presence brings joy. I invite you to make your presence real to me this day and to fill me with your joy in every moment. When I think of Christmas presents, let me translate it to enjoying your presence.

In Search of CHRISTmas Presence

As Christmas approaches, the sights, sounds, and smells of the season fill the air, reminding us of childhood wonder and the excitement of gifts beneath the tree. Yet as we grow older, we discover a deeper joy: Christmas is not about presents, but presence, the presence of Christ, “God with us.” Amid the busyness, we’re invited to slow down, reflect, and make His presence the centerpiece of our celebration. As you journey through this devotional, may each moment of reflection draw you closer to the true gift of Christmas, Jesus Himself, whose presence transforms every ordinary day.
