How Much Is Enough?

Imagine drinking ten cans of sugary soda every day for a month. Now imagine the week after you stop. You go back to a normal amount of sugar, but your brain starts to panic. It sends signals that something is wrong, that you’re not getting enough. Why?

Because during that month, your body adjusted to the excess. Too much became normal. So now, a reasonable amount feels like deprivation, even though it’s actually better for your body.

Jesus understood this same tendency in us, especially when it comes to money. We get used to wanting just a little more—a little more security, margin, comfort, or status. Before long, “enough” stops being a real category. There’s only “more.”

So how much is enough? Jesus lets us know: We have enough when we have what we need today and trust God to meet our needs tomorrow.

That runs contrary to how many of us have been taught to think. We’re told to always accumulate, save, and insure for an uncertain future. And while there’s wisdom in being prepared, it’s easy to cross the line from wisdom into hoarding.

We can avoid this trap by identifying what’s essential and what’s extra. Food, water, and housing are essentials. Getting the newest car, an extra thousand square feet of real estate, and a few extra zeros in your savings account isn’t evil, but it also isn’t a need.

If you want to pursue biblical financial wisdom, be content with enough. In other words, learn to be okay with simply having enough to get through today.

Some of us are in seasons where even the basics feel out of reach. When Jesus told His followers not to spend their energy asking, “What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?” He wasn’t dismissing real needs. He was pointing to a deeper truth: God knows what we need, and God cares.

So today, take inventory. Notice what’s truly essential and what’s simply extra. Pay attention to what fills your mind, your schedule, and your conversations. Ask God to help you see what’s adding peace and what’s only adding weight.

Prayer

God, thank You for providing what I need. Help me to see where I’ve been chasing more instead of trusting You. Teach me to rest in Your care and to live with gratitude for enough. In Jesus’ name, amen.
