Tough Words for Husbands

Paul’s words to husbands are among the most challenging in Scripture. They aren’t about authority or dominance; they’re about imitation. Christ’s model of love was not self-serving—it was self-giving. He laid down privilege, comfort, and even life itself to lift His bride into holiness.

That’s the pattern God calls men to follow in marriage and, more broadly, in every relationship where we hold influence.

“Love your wives as Christ loved the church” (Ephesians 5:25 NIV). Those words dismantle shallow definitions of manhood. Real love doesn’t take; it gives. It doesn’t demand respect; it earns it through service. It doesn’t chase comfort; it chooses sacrifice.

To love like Christ is to use strength not to control, but to protect—to create an atmosphere where another person can flourish.

The phrase “to make her holy” shows that a husband’s love has a spiritual aim. Christ’s goal wasn’t comfort (although that does happen, and it’s not a bad side effect); it was transformation.

Likewise, the way a man loves shapes the spiritual climate of his home. When he listens patiently, speaks gently, and lives consistently, his love becomes cleansing—it steadies, restores, anchors, and best of all, points to Jesus.

Such love flows from being loved by Christ first (1 John 4:19). You can’t give what you haven’t received. A man grounded in God’s grace becomes a man capable of grace. His security in Christ frees him from the need to win every argument or always be right. He can apologize quickly, forgive readily, and serve gladly because his identity isn’t on the line—it’s already settled.

This calling isn’t just for marriage. Every place where you lead—a team, a friendship, a family—needs this same Christ-shaped love: strength used for another’s good.

When men love this way, the world catches a glimpse of Jesus—love that leads, cleanses, and never quits.

Prayer: Lord, I am taken with Your love. Thank You for the example of Your sacrifice. Help me to use the strength You have given me to create a safe space for others to flourish. Amen.
