The Incomprehensibility of God's Infinity

An overflow of thoughts on infinity

We are now on Day 7 of our study about the infinity of God, and we are still only scratching the surface. Why? Because of the infinite nature of the subject!

Everything we know or can imagine has boundaries and is measurable. Even thinking about the infinity of God has its limits. We can think about how fast someone can run or jump, or how much weight a human can lift. We can measure these things. But how do you measure infinity? Infinity breaks the boundaries of what is measurable.

Once, we were sure that the smallest particle was an atom. Then we moved on to protons, neutrons, and electrons. We discovered a bit more, and scientists now believe it cannot be smaller than a quark. Really? We have no explanation whatsoever for the existence of gravity. Furthermore, we have not the foggiest idea why things hold together. We know that some unidentified power holds an atom together. That same power holds the human body together, the Milky Way, and billions of galaxies. But why? We just do not know. Except that the Bible says everything holds together because Jesus holds everything together. We know things exist, but why does everything not start to disperse and float in billions of directions in a formless, meaningless, undetermined, and totally random way?

God does not lack answers to our questions. He doesn’t need to rejuvenate, rest to gain new strength, re-imagine, adapt to “our times”, or seek new solutions for today's new challenges; he doesn’t need help and cannot be embarrassed for not knowing how to answer us or for not having a solution to our problems. He doesn’t make mistakes and never has to ask for forgiveness. God cannot increase or decrease in love, grace, holiness, and so on. He is already perfect in His entire Being.

If God is everlasting, how do we measure it? Twenty billion years? One hundred billion? And then eternity has not even begun. You see, we still think in terms of beginning and end. Even when we speak about something being “endless”, it is more of an idiomatic expression. We might be on a ship in the middle of the sea and describe “water that stretches endlessly in all directions.” But it is not really endless. All the water in the rivers and oceans of the world can still be counted as drops of water. It is limited.

A last thought: God can never fully explain anything to us because we are finite; it is like seeing a reflection in a mirror. One is real, the other is just an image.

The Incomprehensibility of God's Infinity

The infinity of God is not an easy subject. After all, how can a finite being really understand an Infinite being? For Christians, it is a very important subject to study. The Bible has quite a bit to say about this subject. As you study the infinity of God, you will grow in your faith. You will be more deeply anchored in God, and you will be filled with worship, wonder, humility and praise.
