Made To Be Courageous
When Joshua stepped into leadership after the passing of Moses, God didn’t give him a map or a strategy; he gave him a promise: “I will be with you; I will not leave you or abandon you” (Josh. 1:5 CSB). That promise is what made courage possible.
Courage in the Bible isn’t about being fearless or never being afraid. It’s about trusting God enough to obey him, even when it’s costly, even when you are fearful, and even when you don’t know what the outcome will be.
Three times in Joshua 1 (verses 6, 7, and 9 CSB), God commands Joshua to be strong and courageous. Why? Because obedience would mean facing enemies, uncertainty, and risk, but God’s presence meant Joshua would never face those things alone.
This same promise runs through Scripture. God told Jacob, “I am with you and will watch over you” (Gen. 28:15 CSB). He encouraged Solomon, “Be strong and courageous, and do the work” (1 Chr. 28:20 CSB). The writer of Hebrews reminds believers, “I will never leave you or abandon you” (Heb. 13:5 CSB), and Jesus himself declared, “I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matt. 28:20 CSB).
If you belong to Christ, God’s presence can give you courage. You may not know the outcome, but you know he will not leave you, and that means courage can look like sharing your faith, reconciling a relationship, confessing sin, taking a step of obedience, or leading where he’s called you.
The Spirit you’ve received is not one “of fear, but one of power, love, and sound judgment” (2 Tim. 1:7 CSB), so courage isn’t recklessness; it’s faith in action.
The Lord never abandons his people, which leads to this question: what would you do for the glory of God if you knew it wouldn’t fail?
This does not mean the result you want will happen, but imagine for a moment what might happen if God blesses your obedience.
Do not be afraid, because the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.
Reflection Question: If you truly believed God is with you wherever you go, what step of obedience would you take this week that fear has been holding you back from?
Prayer: Father, thank you for your presence and your promises. Help me to trust you enough to obey you, even when I feel afraid. Give me courage through your Spirit to walk in faith today, and remind me that I am never alone because you are with me always.
