Spiritual Foundations of Leadershipනියැදිය

A Leader Who Washes the Feet of His Followers
Honestly, how many times have you seen a leader washing the feet of his followers? Maybe not many. On one occasion, Jesus Christ took the initiative to clean the feet of his disciples or followers. It was at the last supper He had with them, the night before He was crucified. He took the initiative to do something that could be culturally considered somewhat denigrating at that time (and perhaps today as well). Jesus volunteered for the job, thus initiating servant leadership in the face of an act that perhaps no one else would do. He took the risk and undertook the service. According to EQUIP, he "did not wait for a 'kick-off rally' to start."
His transcendent action not only honored the human condition of those present through practical and real service; but it was also an opportunity to inspire them to do the same as he challenged them by saying: "After washing their feet, he put on his cloak again, sat down and asked, 'Do you understand what I just did? You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and you are right, for it is what I am. And since I, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet, you must wash one another's feet. I gave them my example to follow. Do as I have done to you." (John 13:12-15 NLT) Who would have thought that a towel would become a powerful tool of influence? Serving is synonymous with leading.
Reflection:
- Reflecting on Jesus’ example of washing His disciples' feet, how do you intentionally model servant leadership in your current role?
- When was the last time you served someone in a way that surprised them or challenged their expectations of you as a leader?
- How can you make such acts of humble service a consistent part of your leadership practice?
