From Lost to Loved: A 30-Day Study of Romans 8නියැදිය

You’ve likely had to prove your identity at some point. Maybe when logging into your bank account or resetting a password. This process is called authentication. Sometimes it involves a second layer, perhaps a code or a security question. The logic is simple: when the stakes are high, access requires confirmation of your identity.
So what confirms someone truly belongs to Christ?
The Holy Spirit is the only authenticating mark of salvation. No feeling, track record, or spiritual résumé can replace His indwelling presence. Without the Spirit, you are not Christ’s. Paul doesn’t entertain a third option. You either belong to Christ, or you don’t. The danger of false assurance is real. You can prophesy, serve, give, and do it all “in His name,” and still hear Jesus say, “I never knew you; depart from Me…” (Matthew 7:22–23).
False gospels fail the test of authentication. They substitute the real mark of belonging with performance, emotions, church attendance, or other errant definitions of success. All of them can feel spiritual, but none proves salvation. In Romans 8:9, Paul dismantles every false credential when he writes: “Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Him.”
You cannot behave your way into the Kingdom. You’re not authenticated by feelings or Sunday habits. The question is this: does the Holy Spirit dwell in you? He is not a reward for the religious. He’s the gift to those who believe. His presence authenticates your adoption. He’s called the Comforter for good reason. In a world of confusion, He brings clarity: you are loved and redeemed by Christ.
So how do you know He dwells in you?
First, He convicts of sin. This doesn’t create shame but leads you into repentance with a soft and teachable heart (2 Corinthians 7:10). Second, He stirs affection for Christ. You will grow hungry to know, trust, and obey Jesus in greater measure (Romans 5:5). Third, He empowers real change. You won’t be instantly perfect, but you will evidence a pattern of repentance, obedience, and growth (2 Corinthians 3:18).
Thank God there is a way to know, not guess or hope, whether your faith is real: the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. Search your life for the signs above. Do you see conviction of sin, love for Christ, and power to change? If not, call out to Christ right now! Ask Him to forgive your sins, make you His own, and fill you with His Spirit.
REFLECT:
Where have I mistaken spiritual activity for the Spirit’s presence in my life?
