Day 19: Elijah—Prayer

Have you ever prayed fervently for something and wondered if your prayers really made a difference?

Main Course

Elijah was a prophet whose life showed the power of prayer. When he declared there would be neither dew nor rain except at his word, the heavens closed for three years (1 Kings 17:1). It wasn’t Elijah’s authority that made the difference, but his prayers rooted in God’s command.

On Mount Carmel, Elijah stood before the prophets of Baal and a wavering nation. At the time of sacrifice, he simply prayed, “Answer me, Lord, answer me, so these people will know that you, Lord, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again” (1 Kings 18:37 NIV). Fire fell from heaven, consuming the offering, wood, stones, and water. The people fell prostrate, declaring,“The Lord—he is God! The Lord—he is God!” (1 Kings 18:39, NIV).

Prayer is not about eloquence but dependence.Elijah’s prayer was short but full of faith, and God answered in power.

Later, Elijah prayed for rain to return. Seven times he sent his servant to look toward the sea, and on the seventh, a small cloud appeared (1 Kings 18:41–45). His persistence shows us that prayer is not just asking once, but continuing until God’s answer comes.

James reflects on Elijah’s life:“The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain … Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain” (James 5:16–18 NIV).

Elijah was not superhuman; he was an ordinary man with extraordinary faith in God.His story reminds us that prayer is less about our strength and more about God’s power.

When you pray, you are joining your voice to the God who holds all authority. Like Elijah, you may be called to pray bold prayers, to persist in faith, and to believe that God can turn hearts and change circumstances.

Prayer is powerful because the One who hears is powerful.
