Psalm 91: Supernatural Protection in Times of Anxiety

RESTING IN HIS FAITHFULNESS

The Christian life is never an easy one. If anything, we face greater opposition than those far from God. After all, why waste arrows on a dead target? The enemy’s strategy is to aim at those alive in Christ—His body, the church.

And yet, in the midst of hardship, we choose to take refuge in the One who delivers us. We rest in His faithfulness, even when we don’t know how our battles here will end, because we are certain that the war has already been won. In the end, the lion and the serpent will be trampled, and above all, the ancient serpent—Satan himself—will be destroyed forever.

We can’t face the here and now rightly without looking ahead to the then and there. Like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego before the fiery furnace, we may not know whether deliverance will come in this life. But we do know this: adversity does not have the final word.

All we need is one look at the cross and the empty tomb to remind ourselves that God does not lie. He heard our cry and came down in the flesh to experience all that makes us human—and through it, He crushed the reign of sin, death, and Satan.

In the risen Christ, we already have the first fruits of what awaits us in Him, no matter what our present circumstances look like. And it’s because of His faithfulness that we can live with joy even in adversity.

Joy doesn’t mean jumping around with superficial happiness, as if we were detached from reality. It means that in any circumstance, with our lives hidden in Christ, we always have something to celebrate.

On the cross, Jesus was abandoned so that you and I would never have to walk alone. He secures our lives, is present with us in our trials through His Spirit, and offers unthinkable satisfaction even in the midst of pain.

“In You I rest, Jesus.” That’s the prayer we want to make—and to preach to ourselves—in our hardest moments.

Psalm 91: Supernatural Protection in Times of Anxiety

Psalm 91 has, for centuries, been a place believers turn to for safety and protection in times of fear and anxiety. The world is a hostile place, and we are painfully aware of how small and fragile we are. But the psalmist reminds us that our God is greater than any danger. What remains is our choice: in the face of life’s realities, will we place ourselves under His wings—where we find true and lasting refuge?
