Anglers, Really?
The first four people Jesus called to follow Him were fishermen.
Because they were fishermen by trade—not students of other rabbis—we can be sure Simon, Andrew, James, and John weren’t the best of the best. When Jesus called fishermen to be His first ambassadors, He made a powerful statement: He wasn’t looking for elites.
He wasn’t after the most polished or most impressive. He wasn’t recruiting the guys with flawless technique and perfect fly casts. Jesus was launching a movement—one that continues even now—by inviting ordinary people with wet socks and empty fly boxes to follow Him.
This world values performance. It gives extra honor to the wealthy, beautiful, and talented. It especially elevates athletes and celebrities, those who impress us with their skill and strength.
But Jesus wants you.
His kingdom doesn’t play by those rules. He doesn’t measure your value by your résumé, reputation, or reach.
Do you have clumsy days—on the water, in your work, or at home? Do you ever feel painfully ordinary, or like you’re barely keeping your head above water?
It’s okay. If you’ve taken Jesus up on His invitation, you are anything but ordinary. You belong to Him. His power and wisdom are at work in your life. And often, it’s those places you feel weak, unimpressive, or unfinished that become the loudest sermons of grace.
Paul wrote:
“He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’
Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” (2 Cor. 12:9)
Reflective Prayer:
Jesus, thank You for choosing the ordinary. Remind me that I don’t need to impress You to be used by You. Let my weakness showcase Your strength, and let my life point to Your grace.
