Day 2
Eternal + Everywhere

He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together.
– Colossians 1:17 (NLT)

Think about your earliest memory. What is the first thing you can remember from when you were very young?

We were all born at a certain time, on a certain day, in a certain year, and we can’t remember that far back. But there were years, decades, centuries, and even millennia of human history before you were born. You can learn about what happened and the people who lived in those times, but to you, it is history. You only truly experience the time you live through in the particular spot on Earth where you happen to be.

But God is different. The Bible tells us that He isn’t bound by time or space. He is eternal. God had no beginning, and He will have no end. He doesn’t have an earliest memory because He’s always been. He never had to be born. He will never die.

God is also spirit, which means He doesn’t just exist in one physical location like we do. Even though we can’t see God, the Bible says that God is there no matter where we go. He is always with us. He is with you when you are at work. At the same time, He is with your child when they are at school. And at that same moment, He is with everyone on the other side of the world as they sleep.

In the Bible, God says, “Can anyone hide from me in a secret place? Am I not everywhere in all the heavens and earth?” (Jeremiah 23:24 NLT) The Bible also says that God “existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together.” (Colossians 1:17 NLT)

Think about how amazing God is. He is eternal. He is everywhere. And that means there has never been and will never be a time when or a place where God is not with you. Meanwhile, He cares about you and loves you very much. When we realize that God is always with us, it helps us know that we can always talk to Him. We can pray and ask Him for help. We can talk to Him about anything. We can take comfort from His presence in all circumstances.

Reflect: Am I comforted or frightened by the fact that God is always with me? Why?
