The Root of Your Fears

Do you fear God won’t come through for you because of something you’ve done or failed to do? Perhaps you are fearing the worst will happen in your circumstances when you really don’t have a reason for such fears.

None of us are strangers to fear. Our fears range from living out our lives alone, to not being able to make a difference in this world, to losing someone or something precious to us. Often, our fears are rooted in a misunderstanding of who God really is. We can tend to see Him as one who is angry and has no intention of letting us enjoy our lives. Or we may think God is keeping a tally of our good versus bad actions, intending to pay us back for mistakes we’ve made in the past. Perhaps you believe God will think long and hard before coming to your rescue when you find you are in need.

Faith Over Fears

But God isn’t an angry God eager to strike back at you with a vengeance. He isn’t looking at a checklist, waiting to see when you’ll earn or deserve His favor. He isn’t stingy when it comes to His mercy and His kindness. Throughout Psalm 136, we are told His “faithfulness is everlasting” and in the ESV, that song repeatedly tells us God’s “steadfast love endures forever.” He is a God whose mercy never ends and who loves to care for His children.

Jesus said if we, being human and sinful, know how to give good gifts to our children, how much more will our Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him? (Matthew 7:11).

He’s also a God who wants you to love and trust Him as a child would trust a loving, dependable parent. Hebrews 11:6 says, “Without faith it is impossible to please Him, for the one who comes to God must believe that He exists, and that He proves to be One who rewards those who seek Him.”

God wants your faith—not your fear—that He really can come through for you. But to have faith in Him, you must know who He is and be convinced He’s trustworthy.

The Bible tells us there is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear (1 John 4:18). That means if you love God perfectly, you will trust Him completely, and where there is complete trust, there is no room for fear.

How can you increase your trust in God and know without a doubt that He’ll come through for you?

Let go of the guilt that causes you to fear God’s punishment. We all have baggage that we, by nature, try to hide. But God wants to release you of the guilt and shame in your past. Psalm 32:5 says, “I acknowledged my sin to You, and my iniquity I did not hide; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD”; and You forgave the guilt of my sin.” Not only does God forgive us of our past wrongs when we are truly sorry for them, He removes them from our record—as far as the east is from the west (Psalm 103:12). Confess your sin and believe He’s forgiven you.

Look to Scripture to reshape your understanding of God. Regardless of what you may perceive about God, Scripture says He has loved you with an everlasting love (Jeremiah 31:3); He laid down His life to suffer in your place so you would not have to be separated from Him for eternity (Romans 5:8); and “nothing can ever separate us from God’s love” (Romans 8:38 NLT). Death can’t, and life can’t. The angels can’t, and the demons can’t. Your fears for today, your worries about tomorrow, and even the powers of hell can’t keep God’s love away from you when put your trust in Christ Jesus.

Lord, thank You for being a good, loving, dependable Father who always has my back. You deserve my complete trust. Help me to believe You will come through for me in whatever I need today—and always.
