Today Barrett reminds us that what most fundamentally shapes our worldview and outlook on life is not a general tendency toward optimism or pessimism, but the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, which allows us to honestly face the pain and brokenness of the world with a living hope.

Where have you felt the tension lately of hope and despair, chaos and calm? How does Jesus’ resurrection change everything?

Slowly read through 1 Peter 1:3-5: “All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with great expectation, and we have a priceless inheritance—an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay. And through your faith, God is protecting you by his power until you receive this salvation, which is ready to be revealed on the last day for all to see” (NLT).

Ask yourself: What word or phrase jumps out at me? Is there a particular promise or declaration that’s standing out?

Read through the passage again. Pray: God, what are you inviting me to see and embrace? What is your invitation to me?

Take a moment to reflect back to God what’s on your heart and to rest in his promises.
