DAY 10 – SONGS OF JOY

Reflection: As we continue exploring the joyfulness of God, Zephaniah, the prophet from the days of King Josiah, creates a picture for us of sitting under the joyful songs of the Living God.

We are first reminded that God is among us – we know through Jesus's teaching that the Holy Spirit is at work across the earth, drawing people to himself. This God is not only present, but he’s a mighty or 'warrior' saviour – who fights battles we can’t win, to bring salvation we desperately need.

There’s a tenderness to this warrior – he delights in us – we gladden his heart. And after defeating the enemies of our soul, he calms our fears out of his unconditional love.

Just as a parent might sing over a child to ease their distress or lift their spirits or make them laugh, God himself sings joyful songs over our life. While we may not hear them, if we still our hearts, we can sense the wonder of the songs of God over us.

There is a prelude to this beautiful picture, seen in the verses before our passage. These promises are for those from whom all ‘haughtiness’ has been removed and who approach God with trust – ‘lowly and humble’. When we surrender to God, he sings joy over our life.

Choose joy: Search your heart for haughtiness, that stubborn place of superiority and disdain. It’s blocking your ears to the grace and joy that God longs to sing over you.
