Praise & Lament: In Front of the Text

Our Christian worship may give preference to praise over lament. What would it be like if we balanced the two like they are in the book of Psalms?

Praise & Lament

You may want to try your hand at writing your own psalm of thanksgiving following the same format as those in the Bible.

Write a Psalm of Thanksgiving

Using the formula that we used In the Text, write a brief personal psalm of thanksgiving describing a time in your life when God delivered or restored you according to his promises. Don’t overthink this or become preoccupied with literary style. This exercise is more about becoming attuned to this biblical style of thought and using the categories in your own voice, than it is about developing something nicely written or poetic. Restrict yourself to one sentence or phrase per category.

Wrap-up

Nicole wraps up this lesson in which we learn that many psalms are complaints, psalms are for individuals and the community, and that Israel wasn’t the only one with hymns and laments—some are actually similar to those in the Bible.
