Although Josiah was faithful, the inevitable judgment was only postponed, not cancelled. The final days of Judah were filled with human efforts to avoid what had been predicted long ago in the Torah Josiah was read.

The monarchy that began in Israel with Saul in the book of 1 Samuel ends with the reign of the Southern King Zedekiah in early 6th century BC. The monarchy in the Northern Kingdom, Israel, ended with King Hoshea over a hundred years earlier when the Assyrians conquered that kingdom. Judah outlasted Israel in this respect, but its monarchy met a similar fate.
The last four rulers of Judah each had fairly brief, unsuccessful reigns. See the graphic below.
