Day 1

“Behold the Lamb of God!”

Those were the words that echoed through the Middle Eastern desert two thousand years ago. Those were the words that described the ultimate revolutionist of all time. Those were the words that caused people to turn their lives around. Those were the words that brought awakening to a nation and its leaders. Those were the words that described Jesus. The Christ, the Messiah, the Savior, the King of the universe, the Son of God, and God Himself.

It is important to note that throughout the Gospels, Jesus was never called the sheep of God, but only the Lamb of God. The major difference between a sheep and a lamb (besides their age) is a lamb’s purity, innocence, and being faultless in their ways of life. In the Bible, a lamb is always a symbol of something that is willingly sacrificed for another. In the life of Jesus, we see exactly that. Someone who lived a life of purity, being innocent and never sinning against God or people. We see Jesus as the One who came to be a sacrifice for the sins of humanity. Even before He was born, the angel gave a message to His mother that His name would be “Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” We even learn from the prophets of the Old Testament that Jesus came to be led as a lamb to the slaughter. Jesus knew what His purpose was going to be on earth, and thus, when He was given the name “Lamb of God,” He knew what it would entail and what was to come.

Another interesting fact about lambs is that they are naturally curious about their surroundings, and they love to climb. Like most young animals, they like to play and explore the area around them. When we connect this with Jesus's life, we see that He was always on the move. He never remained in the same place for a very long time. He moved from Nazareth to Galilee to Capernaum to Jerusalem, He even made His fair share of dwelling in the wilderness for a time and a purpose. Jesus, as the Lamb of God, was so encouraged by His love for people and God that He ultimately climbed the hill of Calvary for us. “Like a lamb led to the slaughter,” He ascended that rugged hill, and when He was lifted up, all who were close could encounter the words of the servant of God be fulfilled, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.”

Behold the Lamb of God

Throughout Scripture and especially the New Testament, we find a lot of analogies being used to describe the character and the role of Jesus Christ towards us, as humanity. In this plan, we will look at the similarities between Jesus and a lamb and how and why we need to connect to Him as the Lamb of God. Another plan to read together with this one: "Behold the Lion of God"
