David became a refugee

“And David rose and fled that day from Saul” (1 Samuel 21:10)

David had been anointed king. God’s Spirit had rushed upon him. But instead of actually reigning the country, he had to flee from King Saul. He had to leave his wife and his home because his life was in danger. Over and over again, people betrayed his hiding places and Saul chased him around the country “like one who hunts a partridge in the mountains”. David even crossed the border to seek refuge in neighboring countries.

This was an extremely difficult time for David. But he did not lose his faith in the Lord. Instead, he wrote a lot of Psalms that are collected in the Bible. For example Psalm 57:2 - “I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills His purpose for me.”

No matter how badly he was treated by Saul and other Israelites, no matter how long it took for God’s promises to come true, David put his trust in God and was convinced that He would fulfill His purpose. And ultimately He did.
