Presence: The Arrival

DAY 1 OF 5

The Arrival_1: The Promise in the Dark

Advent begins with a promise spoken into a waiting world. Isaiah describes a coming King whose reign will be marked by peace, justice, wonder, and unending light. Yet the prophecy was given in a time of deep struggle. God’s word arrived not in comfort, but in chaos.

We also live in the tension of “coming, but not yet.” We hear echoes of redemption, but the world still groans. Advent teaches us to wait with expectation—listening for the footsteps of a Savior who has promised to come near.

As we read this poem, we join the ancient longing for the One who brings hope into every shadow.

Poem: Coming, But Not Yet — Sue Heatherington
Can you hear it in the whispers
of the children in the dark,
or the wind across the wasteland
where the boots have left their mark.

It is coming
it is coming
it is coming
but not yet.

As the waiting seems forever
to the child and the oppressed
distant sights on the horizon
speak of promise and of peace.

Hope is coming
light is dawning
are we ready
for His voice?

Time stands still in all our longing
in our hopes and in our dreams
for the King of Glory coming
righting wrongs upon the earth.

God is with us
He is coming
in His glory
but not yet.

He is coming
Christ is coming
Are we ready for His day?

He is coming
He is coming
He is coming
But yet

Reflection Question

Where do you feel the tension of “not yet” in your own life—and how might God be inviting you to trust His coming?

Prayer

Jesus, Light of the world, meet me in the places of waiting. Teach my heart to trust Your timing and to hope in Your promise. Come into my shadows with Your peace. Amen.
