Ephesians: Reading the Bible for Spiritual Transformation

DAY 7 OF 7

Walk in Love

So far in this reading plan, we have been marinating on Paul's words to the Church at Ephesus, considering carefully how God might want to transform our identity, our relationships, and our way of life. Truly, in Christ we are invited into an interactive, intimate life with God that in time leaves no area of daily life unchanged.

Today, as we bring this reading plan to a close, we will consider one final thought from the Apostle's letter: his invitation to walk in love.

  • Because of Christ's dwelling in our hearts through faith we are "being rooted and grounded in love." (See Ephesians 3:17 NRSV)
  • Humility, gentleness, and patience become our manner of life empowering us to "bear with one another in love." (See Ephesians 4:2 NRSV)
  • As His apprentices we are to become mature in every way so that we might "speak the truth in love." (See Ephesians 4:15 NRSV)

To walk in love is to embrace a new way of life. A way of life that is fueled by Christ's love demonstrated by His life, death, and resurrection. A way of life characterized by surrender to Christ in order that we might organize our days with Him as the center of all that we are. A way of life that drives us to our knees in prayer so that our lives might reflect the love of God to the world around us.

It is this love that Jesus spoke about when he said, "I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:34-35 NRSV)

Today, consider joining me in the following prayer. "Lord Jesus, please help us to love well. Open our eyes to see people the way you see them. Wherever we go, whatever we do, may our lives be an imitation of your love. And with each passing day, may we become people who are known by our love."
