10 Commandments for Athletes From Philippians

DAY 5 OF 10

Christian Athlete, Model Your Life After Other Faithful Brothers and Sisters

"Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us" (Philippians 3:17 ESV).

Paul tells the Philippians to follow his example and that of others who live faithfully. We all need people who model what godliness looks like in real life. The people around you shape the person you’re becoming, so choose wisely.

But what does this look like practically? It means paying attention to those who embody humility, perseverance, and faith under pressure. Watch how they handle conflict, disappointment, or success. And move from watching to wondering with them by asking a question like: What habits or rhythms help you grow in your relationship with God?

Let their example challenge and inspire you. But also remember: someone’s watching you, too. Your teammates, classmates, or younger players notice how you respond to adversity and success. This is a call and challenge to be the kind of example that points others toward Jesus. The Christian life is like a relay race where the baton of faith is passed on when it’s lived out visibly and authentically. So make sure you have the right people in your race!

Reflection Questions:

  1. Who in your life models Christlike character for you?
  2. What kind of example are you setting for those who look up to you?

Prayer to Consider:
Jesus, thank You for the people who have modeled faith for me. I need your help to identify more people in my life that I can follow their example. Help me live in such a way that others see You in me. For your glory, my joy, and the good of others. Amen.

About this Plan

10 Commandments for Athletes From Philippians

If we’re trying to integrate faith and sport using Paul’s letter to the Philippians, where do we turn? Probably Philippians 4:13. It’s one of the best (though often misused) verses for athletes. But the rest of the letter offers much to anyone involved in sports. Paul writes like a coach, calling his team to a high standard, getting right to the point—understandable since he’s writing from prison. Whether you call them commands, principles, or coaching points, Paul lays out a map for faithful living. This 10-day devotional journeys through 10 commands from Paul’s Philippian playbook.
