Don't Worry

Anxiety seems to be the malady of our fast-paced, modern world, and many live with some form of it. It often begins with a legitimate concern that grows into something larger and refuses to let go.

Jesus sees our worry and wants to free us from that burden. In verse 25 He addresses some of our greatest concerns when He tells us not to worry about the provisions we need for life. Why? Because those daily needs are in His hands. Jesus says, "Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap... and yet your heavenly Father feeds them" (v26a ESV). If God so faithfully provides for creatures of lesser value, how much more can we be assured of His provision for those He loved enough to send His Son to die for?

To worry about such things is beneath our calling as His children. It’s to live as though our Father were not trustworthy. Instead, Jesus calls us to a greater pursuit: "But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you" (v33 ESV). Our task is to seek God’s reign; His promise is to supply our needs. Anchoring our lives in His kingdom frees us from worry because our needs are never overlooked but are lovingly met by His care.

The freedom that Christ bought for us at the cross gives us the choice not to be anxious. And Jesus silences the legitimacy of our anxiety by asking: "Which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?" (v27 ESV).
