Harvesting season comes every year. Before something can be harvested, it must be planted. Jesus used the imagery of a seed being planted in the ground to point his followers to a profound spiritual truth: for something to grow, something must be planted underground, and the process will require some hidden, slow work before you see the result. He was preparing them to understand his death as part of a larger story, but it also points us to follow his lead.

Read John 12:24-26.

Questions to consider:

• In general, am I patient and trusting in my spiritual life, or am I more anxious when I’m unsure about what’s happening?
• How does Jesus’ example–especially as he approached his death–encourage me?

An action step to take:

Name something that you have a hard time trusting God with. Imagine holding it in your hands, then talk to God about what it’s like to open up your hand, giving it over to Him to be in control.
