God Is in Control

DAY 2 OF 30

Day 2: Beyond Human Understanding

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” —Proverbs 3:5–6 (NIV)

We love to understand things. When a problem arises, our instinct is to research, analyze, and organize until we believe we’ve found the right answer. Information feels like power, and we’re taught that the more data we have, the better our decisions will be.

But sometimes, the very need to control every detail keeps us from experiencing God’s best.

King Solomon understood this. When God offered him anything, he asked for wisdom above wealth or fame. Yet this same wise man told us, “Do not lean on your own understanding.”

The Hebrew word he used is binah, a deep understanding gained through life experience and discernment. Solomon wasn’t dismissing reason or intelligence. He was putting them in their proper place.

The truth is, our perspective is limited. It’s like staring at a massive mural through a tiny keyhole. We see only a small fragment and think we understand the whole picture. But God painted it all. He sees every brushstroke, every connection, every purpose.

Take Joseph, for example. In prison, he could have been overwhelmed by confusion: “I helped my brothers, and they betrayed me. I worked faithfully, and I was falsely accused. I interpreted dreams, and I was forgotten.” Nothing made sense from where he could see. But from God’s perspective, every detail was shaping a redemptive story that would save nations.

Sometimes our pursuit of understanding becomes a prison. Overthinking can paralyze us, keeping us from taking the next step. Faith, however, reminds us: you don’t need to see the entire staircase. Just trust God enough to step onto the first rung.

Human logic can keep you trapped in a prison that only faith can unlock.

When you trust the Lord with all your heart, you are free to make wise decisions without the crushing weight of controlling the outcome. You can plan and prepare, but with open hands instead of clenched fists, because there is Someone who already knows the beginning, middle, and end of your story.

My Prayer:

Father, too often I try to figure everything out on my own, forgetting that Your wisdom is greater than mine. Give me faith to trust You even when I don’t understand, and courage to take each step led by Your hand. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Reflect:

  1. In what areas of your life are you trying to control more than you are trusting God?
  2. When was the last time you saw His plan turn out better than yours?
