30 Days in Proverbs

DAY 28 OF 30

Proverbs 28 is full of practical wisdom about wealth, relationships, and the heart’s posture toward sin. Today, I want to focus on verse 13 and the importance of confessing our sins.

If you remember my story about moral failure in ministry, you know that confession played a pivotal role in God’s redemptive work in my life. Let me be honest—did I want to confess what I had done? Not at all. In my flesh, I recoiled at the thought. I was ashamed, afraid of the consequences, and terrified of disappointing those I loved.

Yet, confession turned out to be the best thing I could have done. Sin, left unaddressed, festers. It’s like a leaven that quietly spreads, contaminating everything in its path—our hearts, our relationships, our ministry, even our sense of self. The weight of keeping it hidden was crushing, and I knew that if I didn’t bring it into the light, it would destroy me from the inside out.

Verse 13 says it plainly: “Whoever conceals their sin will not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy” (ESV).There’s no sugarcoating it. Confession is hard. It’s humbling. It costs something. But mercy—God’s mercy—meets you when you choose to step into the light.

Friend, I want to speak directly to you: bring your sin into the light. It could be a lie you’ve told a friend, a cover-up at work, or an addiction that’s tightened its grip on your life. Confession isn’t just about admitting wrongdoing—it’s about freedom, restoration, and experiencing the grace of God fully.

Yes, my confession had consequences. I lost my role at church, strained relationships, and my reputation took a hit. It set me back years in some ways. But, I would never undo that moment of confession. God’s grace and redemption met me in the aftermath in ways I could never have imagined.

Verse 14 reminds us why: “Blessed is the one who fears the Lord always, but whoever hardens their heart will fall into calamity" (ESV). When you choose to fear God above people, opinions, or consequences, you protect your heart from the devastation pride and shame can bring.

So, let today be a gentle yet firm nudge: don’t hide your sin. Confess it, repent, and walk in the mercy and freedom that only God can give. It’s hard, yes—but it’s worth every step.
