Reimagine Courage Through the Life of Stephen

DAY 2 OF 5

When Truth Brings Trouble

Have you ever been misunderstood, criticized, or even attacked for standing up for what's right? Maybe it happened at work when you refused to compromise your integrity, or in your family when you took an unpopular—but biblical—stand. It’s one of the most disheartening experiences in life: doing the right thing and suffering for it. But Stephen’s story reminds us of a deeper truth—opposition often confirms that we’re on the right path, not the wrong one.

Stephen’s Spirit-filled ministry and unshakable wisdom made him impossible to defeat in honest debate. So, his opponents resorted to dishonest means. They secretly persuaded others to lie, accusing him of blasphemy against Moses and God…and it worked. The people, elders, and teachers of the law were stirred up. Stephen was seized and dragged before the Sanhedrin—the very same religious court that had condemned Jesus to death. The charges were severe: “This fellow never stops speaking against this holy place and against the law.” (Acts 6:13, NIV)

Yet what happens next is astonishing. Luke writes, “All who were sitting in the Sanhedrin looked intently at Stephen, and they saw that his face was like the face of an angel.” (Acts 6:15, NIV) In the middle of false accusations and in the presence of powerful enemies, Stephen’s face radiated supernatural peace and calm.

What do we learn from this moment? Telling the truth will sometimes get you in trouble. Walking in God’s will can lead straight into opposition. Suffering isn’t always a sign that something’s gone wrong. It’s often a sign you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be.

Stephen’s bold proclamation of the gospel didn’t offend because it was rude—it offended because it was true. His words exposed the emptiness of religious tradition without relationship. That made his listeners uncomfortable. Still today, when the gospel threatens comfort or control, opponents often respond not with reasoned disagreement but with distortion, deflection, or personal attack.

When that happens, Stephen shows us how to respond. He didn’t panic or strike back. He didn’t backpedal or water down the message. He stood firm, trusting that God saw the truth even if others didn’t. His face didn’t reflect fear or fury—it reflected heaven’s peace.

You will face similar choices. When standing for Jesus brings tension, misunderstanding, or rejection, will we cave to avoid discomfort—or will we stand with grace and courage? Stephen reminds us that God’s approval is more important than public opinion. And when we value His “well done” above the world’s applause, we’ll discover a peace that can’t be shaken—even in the face of false accusations.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Have you ever experienced opposition or misrepresentation because of your Christian convictions? How did you respond?
  2. What would it look like for your “face to be like that of an angel” in a moment of opposition? Remember: The more time we spend with God, the more His character becomes visible in us.

Prayer:
God, when truth brings trouble, help me respond with Stephen’s courage and calm. Let Your peace shine through me in moments of conflict. Teach me to value Your approval above all else. Amen.
