Wealth and Poverty

DAY 1 OF 10

God owns the whole earth

“The Lord makes poor and makes rich; he brings low and he exalts.” (1 Samuel 2:7 ESV)

In beautiful and crucial moments throughout the Bible, we read about God's power. This power encompasses all of life. Both Hannah and Mary sing about this power when they are expecting a child. The Lord makes the poor and the Lord makes the rich.

God controls life and has power over the whole earth. The earth is Mine, says the Lord in another passage. A Christian may live by that faith. It is a miracle that we can see the world around us as a gift of creation. It is also a miracle that we can experience that God Himself determines who becomes rich and who remains poor.

This truth also raises questions. Although we may claim that God is the owner of all money and possessions, this does not mean that everyone handles them responsibly. In fact, the opposite is true! When man was given dominion over the earth in paradise, he overstepped the mark. He wanted to understand things, to see if he could attain even higher levels of knowledge and power. And that was his fall. Since then, the earth has been cursed, and possessions have become a blessing to some but a burden to others. Nevertheless, God remains the giver. Consider Job. He was wealthy at the start of his life, but he lost everything. After a period of testing, however, he ultimately received more than enough.. God guided his life mysteriously. By keeping his eyes fixed on God, Job was blessed during and after his time of trial.

All things belong to God. He has wealth and poverty at his disposal. Do you understand this idea? We hope to explore this further in the coming days.
