Living LifeWise: The Good Samaritan

DAY 4 OF 5

We’ve all seen those viral videos where an influencer surprises a stranger by covering their rent for a month or paying their entire grocery bill. What makes those moments so moving isn’t just the money; it’s that someone willingly stepped in to meet a real need, expecting nothing in return. Sacrificial love captures our attention because deep down, we know how rare it is.

The Samaritan’s act of compassion was even greater. You see, the Samaritan had every reason to pass by. Culturally, Jews and Samaritans despised each other. He didn’t just help a stranger; he helped someone who was considered his enemy. When he saw the wounded man, something deeper moved in his heart: compassion. He stopped. He bandaged wounds. He gave up time, money, and comfort to care for someone who could offer him nothing in return.

This is a picture of the gospel. When sin left us broken and hopeless, Jesus didn’t walk past. He came near. He healed our deepest wounds, paid the cost for our sin with His own blood, and continues to care for us daily.

When we understand the depth of His love for us, we are freed and empowered to love others in the same way. Loving like Jesus isn’t always convenient or easy, but it is always worth it. Every act of mercy points back to the One who showed us mercy first.

Ask yourself: Who around you needs the kind of compassion that goes beyond words? Maybe it’s a coworker carrying heavy burdens, a neighbor who feels forgotten, or a family member struggling in silence. Loving others sacrificially is how we reflect Christ to a world desperate for Him.

Reflect: Contemplate what it costs you to love others with mercy. Identify how showing that kind of love reflects Christ.

  • How does the Samaritan’s response mirror what Jesus has done for us?
  • What might it cost you to love someone sacrificially this week?
  • What stops you from extending mercy, and how can you overcome it?

Pray: Pray and thank Jesus for coming near to rescue us. Ask for help to reflect His mercy to others.

About this Plan

Living LifeWise: The Good Samaritan

The whole Bible points to Jesus. When we encounter the gospel in Scripture, Jesus changes our desires, actions, and character to be more like His. This 5-day study plan is designed to help you establish a consistent, daily quiet time with God and reflect deeply on the Good Samaritan and the importance of love in the Christian life.
