Letting Go of Your Past

DAY 5 OF 7

Day 5: Dealing with the Present

You already know what the Bible says about letting go of your past. You’ve heard the truth. You’ve read the promises. But now comes the part that matters most: how do you walk in it? Where does the strength come from to actually do what God says?

That strength comes from one place: abiding in Jesus. Not just once in a while, and not just when you feel strong. The power comes day by day, moment by moment, as you stay close to Jesus.

Jesus gave us a picture of this in John 15:

“I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit…Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing” (John 15:1–5 NKJV).

That is what Jesus is calling us to. A life of abiding. Not performing. Not pretending. Not going through religious motions. He’s inviting us to remain in Him. To stay connected to the Source. To live in a close, personal relationship with Him.

When you or I try to move forward in our own strength, it only leads to frustration. That’s what the Bible calls walking in the flesh. The flesh relies on our own human effort. The Spirit leads us to depend on Christ. That’s why so many people feel stuck in their past; they’re trying to overcome it on their own. I am here to tell you, it will never work. We cannot do it in our own strength.

But when you’re abiding in Christ, your life starts to change. You’re no longer producing from emptiness. His life flows through you. His Spirit fills you. And fruit begins to grow. The Bible describes the kind of fruit that flows from an abiding life:

Winning souls (Romans 1:13)
Holiness (Romans 6:22)
Generosity (Romans 15:28)
Practical service (Colossians 1:6)
Praise (Hebrews 13:15)
Love (Galatians 5:22)

These are not things you achieve by striving. They grow in you as you stay connected to Jesus. That’s why abiding matters so much. Jesus said plainly, “Without Me you can do nothing.”

If you want to move forward from your past, you need power. If you want to bear fruit, you need connection. If you want to be whole, you need to stay close to the One who made you new.

It really is that simple. Abide in Him. Talk to Him. Stay in the Word. Walk in the Spirit. And enjoy a relationship with Him. Jesus hasn’t called you to overcome your past on your own. He’s inviting you to remain in Him and let Him do what only He can do.

Guided Prayer: Jesus, I desire to abide in You. Forgive me for the times that I have tried to do things in my own strength or have just gone through the motions. Help me keep my eyes firmly fixed on You and allow You to do the heart change that is needed in my life. Thank You for loving me and desiring a relationship with me. There is no other place I want to be than close to You. Amen
