Romans 7
The Struggle Within
Paul’s words resonate deeply because he speaks openly about the tension believers often feel—the desire to do right but the struggle to follow through. Romans 7 illustrates a familiar battle: "I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate."
Paul acknowledges that even with a new identity in Christ, believers may still experience a very real conflict. There’s an ongoing war between the old sinful nature and our new identity in Christ. Paul expresses frustration that even when he genuinely desires to obey God, sinful tendencies often pull him back into patterns he despises.
Yet Paul doesn't leave us hopeless. This tension, this internal struggle, points us back to our continual dependence on Christ’s grace and victory. Even when we feel overwhelmed, we remember the truth already established in Romans 6—that sin no longer controls us. While the battle is real, the victory has been secured through Jesus.
Paul’s transparency invites us to acknowledge our struggles honestly, to lean into grace, and to continually return to the truth of who we are in Christ. The tension isn’t defeat—it’s evidence of a heart that’s genuinely pursuing righteousness.
