The Spirit Code - a 5-Day Reading Plan

DAY 3 OF 5

How will you know within yourself that you are being filled with God’s Spirit? As we have seen, His command is that we “be filled with the Holy Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18). The next verse provides the evidence you need: “speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord” (Ephesians 5:19). You will “rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory” (1 Peter 1:8 KJV). . . .

Note that this song is found “in your heart.” I am so glad the instrument of our praise, the proof of our filling, is not evidenced in our vocal cords but in our hearts. I cannot carry a tune and I cannot sing in harmony, but I sure can keep a song where it matters most, in my heart. When our hearts are not right— when we are on the throne of our life— our songs will not be pleasing to the Lord. This is the inward evidence. You will know. You will have a song, not necessarily coming forth from your mouth, but deep within your heart where it really matters.

It is also important to know to whom your song should be directed. Sing “in your heart to the Lord.” The Holy Spirit is in the world to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He is not here to glorify us before other people. Our songs are to be sung to an audience of One, the Lord Jesus Christ. Christian music was never intended to be for performance. In fact, it was not designed by God to be a tool of evangelism. It is not intended for the world. It is to be directed in praise to the Lord.

How will you know that God’s Spirit is filling you? You will have a joyous song, not necessarily coming from your lips but bubbling deep within. You can’t help but to be “singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.” In the traffic patterns of your life, when you hear a song (on the radio or perhaps when you’re on hold on the telephone or in an elevator), let it remind you of the inward evidence of God’s Spirit working in your heart.

Prayer

Father, I long to be filled with You so that I can better serve You in my life. Please be at work in my heart. Amen.
