DAY 1 OF 30

Day 1: Elohim – The Creator God

Devotional:

The Bible opens with a bold, foundational statement: “In the beginning, God created…” Before time, before matter, before light or life, Elohim was. The name used here is Elohim, the majestic plural form of “El,” meaning “strong one” or “mighty one.” It signals God's unlimited power and hints at His complex unity, a truth that would be revealed more fully in the Trinity. Right from the first verse of Scripture, we meet God as Creator, Architect, and Sovereign Lord over all existence.

Elohim speaks, and galaxies respond. He commands, and light pierces the darkness. He forms humanity from dust and breathes into them His very life. Everything that exists finds its origin in Him. There is nothing random or accidental about your world; Elohim designed you, who calls order out of chaos and beauty out of nothing.

The use of Elohim over 2,500 times in the Old Testament emphasizes His power, authority, and transcendence. It reminds us that God is not a projection of humanity, but we are the reflection of His image. It also assures us that the world is divine intention and artistry, not the result of chance or fate.

Created with Purpose

One of the most powerful truths in Genesis 1 is that God created everything with purpose and rhythm. Light and darkness, land and sea, animals and vegetation, all were formed in sequence, each declared “good” by Elohim. Then, as a climactic act of creation, God made humanity in His image and called it “very good.”

That means you are not accidental. You are not an afterthought or a biological fluke. The Creator handcrafts you. You bear the fingerprints of Elohim, the capacity to think, love, create, choose, and relate. You were made to reflect His glory and enjoy a relationship with Him.

When life feels meaningless or chaotic, return to the truth of Genesis 1:1. Elohim created the heavens and the earth, and He made you. And just as He brought form to the formless and filled the void with life, He can do the same in your heart and circumstances.

Elohim and the Trinity

The plural form Elohim is intriguing. Hebrew scholars call it a plural of majesty, emphasizing God’s greatness. But for the Christian, it also points toward something richer: the Trinity. While not fully explained in Genesis 1, the activity of God the Father, the Spirit hovering over the waters (Genesis 1:2), and the Word through whom all things were made (John 1:1–3) are all present.

This tells us something amazing: God is powerfully transcendent and personally relational. He is not a cold force, but a living, loving Creator who exists in perfect relationship and invites us into that fellowship. When you worship Elohim, you worship the triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, who designed you for communion with Himself.

Trusting Elohim Today

Because Elohim created everything, nothing is beyond His reach or repair. No broken dream, shattered heart, or impossible circumstance is too far gone for Him to restore. The same power that created stars and split seas is available today.

You may feel like your life is void, like the darkness is too thick, or your purpose is unclear. But Elohim specializes in forming light out of darkness and life out of dust. The question is: Will you let Him create in you again?

When you wake up tomorrow, remember that Elohim placed the breath in your lungs and the sun in the sky there. He holds every atom together (Colossians 1:17). He knows your name. He called you into existence for such a time as this.

Prayer:

Elohim, my Creator and my God, I praise you for the wonder of your creation and the beauty of your design. Thank you for forming me with purpose and calling me good. Remind me that you still speak light into darkness when I feel formless and void. Shape me anew today. Let my life reflect your majesty and power. It is in the name of Jesus we pray, amen.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Where in your life do you need to invite Elohim to create something new?
  2. What does it mean to you that you are made in the image of God?
  3. How can you reflect Elohim’s creativity and order in your daily living?
