A Life Ablaze

DAY 8 OF 10

Day 8: Ablaze With Humility

So far, we have examined six fuels you need to stir up the fire of God in your heart: the Word of God, prayer, the Holy Spirit, worship, generosity, and holiness. Another fuel we need is humility, an attitude of the heart that trusts God and depends on Him.

The opposite of humility is pride. When someone has a bloated or inflated opinion of himself, he sees himself as being high and mighty, as the saying goes. He might think he’s better or more anointed than his employer, pastor, spouse, or any other person in his life. His opinion of himself has gone to his head, and so it has become unhealthy pride. The devil’s goal is to tempt people into that place, because it will quench the fire of God burning in their heart.

Scripture warns us that when we operate in such pride, we will be defeated in any situation that comes our way. If unhealthy pride is not repented of, a moment will come when God will get involved to resist it (see James 4:6 KJV). The best thing we can do is to stop pride before it starts, because if God Almighty is resisting us, we have no choice but to surrender and repent. We are frozen in place until we get rid of pride and replace it with humility!

Biblical humility is often confused with putting oneself down or berating oneself. Many people mistakenly think that being humble means to be weak or passive, but the Bible tells us that the humble receive God’s grace, power, and fire. It’s not weak at all!

The word “humility” comes from the Greek word that describes a person who has reduced his self-importance. To be humble means to make small, to minimize oneself, or to be willing to stoop to any measure that is needed. By definition, humility portrays someone who has come down from his haughty position to conform to a new behavior that God expects of him.

A person who possesses biblical humility makes room for God to get involved in his life, and God will always come to someone who is humble because humility attracts Him. A humble attitude invites Him on the scene, and when He manifests Himself, fire and power are present and provided. Humility may seem weak to those who are walking in the flesh, but God uses it to cause the humble believer to become a spiritual inferno for Him.

For Your Consideration:

  • What does humility mean to you? Does this match the Biblical image of humility? In what areas can you work to become more Biblically humble?
  • The Word says God is close to those with a broken spirit and a contrite heart. How did the Lord help you when you were brokenhearted? Recall what He did and how He came to you because you humbly looked to Him.
