 Every Nation: Getting to Know God More Through Psalm 19

DAY 5 OF 6

Sweeter Than Honey

What else does David have to say about the Bible? He says it’s like two very special things we have on earth: gold and honey. He says that God’s words are….

…more precious than gold,
than much pure gold;
they are sweeter than honey,
than honey from the honeycomb.
By them your servant is warned;
in keeping them there is great reward.
Psalm 19:10-11, NIV

Gold is worth a lot in our world! It’s hard to find and can be used to buy things, which means humans put a lot of hope in it. David is saying that God’s Word is more important than anything money could buy! He also says that the Bible is sweeter than honey. I don’t know if you’ve ever had honey straight from a honeycomb, but not much is sweeter than that! Even still, David says God’s Word is sweeter. And following God’s Word is a sweet reward too!

David is using two things from God’s creation—gold and honey—to give us a better idea of who God is.

Have you ever tried to describe a food to someone who has never had it before? It’s not easy! It helps to compare the new food to a more familiar food. For example, a favorite dish on the streets of Bangkok is mango sticky rice. If you’ve never tried it, it needs to be next on your list! It’s like southern apple pie. It will melt in your mouth it’s so good! Did you see what I did there? I related something you know about to something you might not know about!

David is doing the same thing for us in this verse. God’s Word is precious…. Precious like gold! And it’s also sweet…. Sweeter than honey!

  • As a family: Think of a fruit but don’t say what it is. Describe it to your family without using the name of the fruit! Is it red like a fire truck? Is it round like a bowling ball? See who can guess it first!
  • Need a hint? The fruit I’m thinking of is juicy like a splash of water, red on the inside like a rose, and green on the outside like a cactus. You guessed it: a watermelon!

About this Plan

 Every Nation: Getting to Know God More Through Psalm 19

Did you know that you can learn about our amazing God whoever you are and wherever you go? The world around us teaches us about who He is. So does the Bible, which we call God’s Word. This week we’re going to read a whole chapter of God’s Word so we can learn what it means to see God in the world around us and the Word in front of us.
