The Lord's Prayer

DAY 5 OF 5

Deliver us from evil

I hope spending a few days in the Lord’s Prayer has prompted you to love it even more. As we do in each episode of The Lord’s Prayer Podcast with theologian David Höhne, taking a closer look at every element of this magnificent prayer should increase our investment in it.

Beyond the podcast and these studies, keep praying the Lord’s Prayer like you mean it. Rather than rip through it or recite it without thinking, take your time. Consider what each part means to you and your life. Approach God with the prayer Jesus taught us, as a genuine request and not a last-minute cry for help.

Worse than that, though, we can just forget to cry out to God at all. Yet, every day, we encounter the opposite of God. We should take seriously the temptations of evil, so why are we not always asking God to ‘deliver us from the evil one’?

‘God is not trying to catch us out,’ David Höhne clarified about this line in the Lord’s Prayer. ‘He is just trying to show us how reliant we are on Him.’ I have noticed an improvement in my ability to avoid temptation when I pray what the Lord’s Prayer instructs. Relying on the Holy Spirit of God to deliver me provides a real escape from evil’s embrace. The Lord’s Prayer reminds and revives my total dependence upon our Father in heaven – hallowed be His name.

About this Plan

The Lord's Prayer

“The Lord’s prayer is one of the most famous parts of the Bible. Even if you have not thought about Jesus’ best-known prayer for a while, you probably know it off by heart. But do you know where to find it in the Bible, and do you know why Jesus was giving a prayer tutorial?” (The Lord’s Prayer – Ben McEachen)
