Witness

DAY 1 OF 4

And You Shall Be My Witnesses

Sadly, so many people today are living in darkness, wandering through life without hope for this life or the life to come. Many have little to no knowledge of the transforming power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. These are not just nameless faces in the crowd. No, they are our friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers who will spend eternity somewhere.

In the book of Acts, Jesus said to His followers both then and now, "you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." (See Acts 1:6-8 NRSV) However, today we have largely put the burden of being Jesus' witnesses on the shoulders of pastors and other church staff who have committed their vocational lives to advancing the Gospel. If you are someone who has put their faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, then you have been called to be His witness to a lost and dying world. Now more than ever, the world needs everyday followers of Jesus to stand up and testify to His saving work on the cross. And to testify to His transforming work in their lives.

As a follower of Jesus, there is no reason to be nervous about what we will say when given the opportunity to testify on His behalf. Why? Because we can be confident that as His apprentices, the Holy Spirit living inside of us will equip us with the right words, at the right time, in accordance with His Eternal purposes. However, our witness for Jesus to the watching world around us is so much more than just the words we speak. Indeed, we are called to live lives that testify to the truth of the Gospel with our words and our actions.

When Jesus said that we would be His witnesses, what exactly did He mean? In a culture that is largely set against the ways of Jesus, what does it look like to be a witness for the Gospel of Jesus Christ? In this reading plan, we will explore three aspects of what it practically looks like to be a witness for Christ in a world desperately in need of hope.

As you go, begin to think about the people in your life who are far from God. Begin to pray for an open door to share your personal testimony of how God, through Jesus, has saved your life.
