Here Am I: Send Me!

DAY 4 OF 5

“Pick me! Pick me!” We have either expressed those words, wished we could say them, or just resigned ourselves to the fact that, given our lack of talent, we would never be picked, when we have been in a situation where teams were being picked. It happens on the playground, in the boardroom, and in other more serious situations where volunteers are needed often.

One place where we would not expect to hear it is in an overheard conversation with God. But that is exactly what happened to the prophet after the cleansing of his sin. Isaiah overhears God’s conversation with the other members of the trinity. I think the musing question was more for Isaiah and for us than a real dilemma for the Almighty, don’t you? Who should I send? Who will go for us? God can certainly speak for Himself. That’s evident by the encounter itself with the prophet. So why would God need someone to go for Him?

The Unique Encounter with God was a gift to the prophet. It was meant to set Isaiah apart for his life’s work. To be a spokesperson for God. The rest of the nation of Israel wasn’t ready or able to have the same intensity of contact with the Almighty. They needed a translator. Someone who was more like them, and less like the all-powerful God of the universe. God wanted to share His message with His people. God doesn’t need us, but He chooses to use us to deliver His message to our peers. However, He was waiting for one simple thing!

Isaiah’s offer to go! We don’t know if he was excited and giddy or reserved and determined. We just know that Isaiah responded with “Here I am. Send me.” An encounter with the Lord always leads to an opportunity to be sent out on His behalf. It did with Isaiah, it will with you too. When we genuinely encounter the Lord, we can’t help but want to tell other people about Him. That’s where we will end tomorrow!
