Consciousness of God's Presence

DAY 2 OF 4

Impact and Importance

For believers, being conscious of God’s presence isn’t an optional extra. Rather, it’s essential and transformative. Without this awareness, we risk living as though God is distant and uninvolved in our lives, and we miss out on the power and benefits of living in the reality of His constant presence. In Psalm 139, David makes it clear that not only is God omnipresent (everywhere), He’s also actively involved in our lives, guiding and upholding us.

The importance of being conscious of God’s presence is multifaceted. Firstly, it brings us into a place of deeper intimacy with God. When we’re aware of His presence, we’re more likely to pray, listen for His voice, and align our lives with His will. Jesus would often draw away, alone, to seek out the presence of His Father, and we are invited to do the same. Unfortunately, many believers ringfence God’s presence into their morning or evening devotions. Jesus, on the other hand, lived in ongoing fellowship with His Father, boldly declaring His total reliance on God. Jesus’ awareness of His Father’s will and ways impacted His earthly ministry, and in the same way, including God in our everyday doings and dealings will impact our decision making and bring clarity and purpose to our lives.

Secondly, awareness of God’s presence ushers in peace and security. No matter what challenges and uncertainties you currently face, you can take comfort in the promise that God is always before you and you will not be shaken. In Jesus, we live and move and have our being. That means God sustains our very existence. Think about how you might live differently, today, knowing every breath you take and every move you make is within God’s care and attention.

Thirdly, being aware of God’s presence is a deterrent against sin, empowering us to live holy, victorious lives. God sees our every thought, word, and deed, and this should inspire us to live in a way that honors Him.

Fourthly, being conscious of God’s presence gives us the confidence to embrace His promises and the boldness to fulfil our calling. It’s far easier to obey God’s prompting if you know He’s with you and goes ahead of you.

Finally, the awareness of God’s presence connects us to an unlimited source of joy and strength. No matter where or how we’re called to serve God, the consciousness of His presence empowers us, shaping our identity and purpose. It reminds us that we don’t labor in our own strength but in the strength God supplies. May we live mindful of the finished work of Christ, fully grasping that He has taken us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to God’s Kingdom. May this truth fill us with such gratitude and delight that we long to be in His presence.
