Are you hungry?
Food satisfies the body. It gives you energy, fills your stomach, and hopefully, it tastes good! The Word of God is also like good food. It feeds and nourishes your spirit. Without this type of nurturing, your spirit would slowly starve. God wants to satisfy all your inner, spiritual hunger as you encounter Him through His Word.
Matthew 4:4 recounts the words of Jesus...
"...'It is written, "Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"" (Matthew 4:4b, NIV)
That's right! God’s Word is the main course in your daily spiritual diet. We can't live without it! I think deep down we know that. No matter how much we try to fill ourselves with pleasure, distractions, and fun, we end up feeling empty.
We need spiritual food which is not from this world. Come to the Word of Life and feast on the only food that can satisfy your deepest longings.
You long to love and be loved.
You long to know God and be known by Him.
You long to be transformed and become more like Him.
You long to fulfill your God-given destiny.
This spiritual hunger needs to be fed with spiritual food. These longings are all promised and fulfilled by God through Christ. When we meditate on God through the scriptures, our spirits are nourished.
Jesus talked about spiritual food when He said, in John 4:32-34...
“...'I have a kind of food you know nothing about.' 'Did someone bring him food while we were gone?' the disciples asked each other. Then Jesus explained: 'My nourishment comes from doing the will of God, who sent me, and from finishing his work.'" (John 4:32b-34, NLT)
Jesus knew that the spirit needed different food than the body. Doing God's will was His spiritual food! The same is true for us. When we do God's will, we find meaning, and purpose, and lasting joy. And we can only do His will when the truth of the Living Word is planted in our hearts.
When you read the word, truth takes root in your heart, like a seed. You’ll water it. You’ll make sure it's in good soil. You’ll tend to it... and as you mature through reading the Scriptures, hearing His Word will blossom into doing His Word!
By filling your spirit with scripture, you can begin to walk in every good promise of God’s will.
Is your spirit hungry right now? Fill it with the Word of God.
Let's pray...
God, I know I will never be full, deep down in my spirit, unless I eat Your spiritual food—Your Word and Your will. I bring You every hunger of my soul, every void, every longing—and I ask You to fill me. I’m looking to Your Word as my source of nourishment and growth. Show me how to do Your will. Show me more of Yourself. In Jesus' name. Amen.
