DAY 6 OF 7

Who is the ruler of your heart?

You used to be ruled by sin, your own desires, but now there’s a new King in charge—it’s Jesus! Where Christ is ruling, there is peace. If peace seems to be missing sometimes, it might be an indicator that the direction you’re heading is not the path God has planned for you.

Colossians 3:15 says…

"And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your heart. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful." [NLT]

If a specific area of your life is stealing your peace, ask God to guide you about it and to direct you to understand it and make necessary changes.

You might find yourself in a situation where you think God is speaking to you about a decision in your life, but you’re just not sure if it’s God or just your imagination—that’s okay! This is a very common challenge in our lives. It takes time to develop discernment. That’s why Wendy and I are going to share with you four things that have helped us test our own sense of how God is directing us.

First of all and MOST importantly…

Check—

To see if what you think He’s showing you lines up with the teachings of the Bible. God never changes, so He will never tell you to act in a way that is inconsistent with His character and the commands of the Bible.

Notice—

Whether or not you feel peaceful about what He’s telling you. If you feel a nagging sense of unease about your decision, it may not be the right choice. Bring it before the Lord in prayer and ask the Holy Spirit to guide you with His peace.

Talk—

Talk to a friend or church leader who is a mature Christian and exhibits the fruit of the Spirit in their lives. Tell them how you think God might be speaking to you, and try asking them, “Does this seem like something God would say?” Ask your friend to pray for you about the matter.

Wait—

If you’re still not sure, and especially if you're praying about a big life decision, take your time. Spend more time praying, waiting, and reading the Scriptures to see if the Lord will direct you further.

1 Corinthians 13:12 describes our spiritual foresight. It says…

"Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely." [NLT]

It’s so important to remember that we don’t have to figure everything out. Rest in the knowledge that God understands what we don’t. One day in Heaven, we’ll see it all clearly. But for now, our ability to see with spiritual insight is somewhat limited. Let God guide you one step at a time.
