Hey Rival: A Biblical Game Plan for Christian Athletesਨਮੂਨਾ

The Perception of the Christian Athlete
Why Christian Athletes are Anything but Soft
Hey Rival –
What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a Christian? What about the first thing that comes to mind when you think of your favorite athlete?
People think different things when they hear the word “Christian.” Yet, the qualities that many admire in Christians are not the same they admire in athletes. In fact, sometimes people label Christians as soft, too nice, not intense enough, or weak. But this couldn’t be further from the truth.
The Bible records the story of Joshua having a conversation with God. Moses had died, and now Joshua was to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land. Joshua knows he’s going to face tough enemies and fight difficult battles. In their conversation, God commands Joshua, not once, but three times, to “be strong and courageous, be strong and courageous, be strong and courageous!”
How could God make this demand of Joshua when he was facing such a difficult task? Later, we find the answer: God promises to be with Joshua wherever he goes.
Today, we can find the same strength and courage that Joshua did, even when we’re facing our rival. We know that every time we step onto the field, God is with us!
The God who guided Joshua in battle is the same God who stands with us in every competition. This truth lets us focus on God's strength and courage, rather than the world's opinion, as we compete.
Application Questions:
- What is a verse or story from the Bible that reminds you that you were created to be strong and courageous?
- How can you remind yourself that God is with you before every competition?
Prayer:
“God, we thank You that You have not created us to be soft, weak, or fearful, but instead created us to be strong and courageous. Help us to remember that Your presence never leaves us, even in the most difficult moments of competition. Amen.”

About this Plan

Most athletes have a pre-game ritual. Having the right mindset is crucial for peak performance. This five-day plan helps make sure that mindset is anchored in Christ. Too often, athletes let performance, public opinion, or outcomes define them. Professional soccer player Kate Wiesner shares in her own words what it means to be strong, free, honorable, and focused on God. It gives a biblical way to compete well both on and off the field. It also helps you see your opponent in a new way—not just as a rival, but as someone you can respect and honor.
