The Artist's Identity: Rooted and Secureਨਮੂਨਾ

Weathering Creative Seasons
My creative life has been marked by distinct seasons—explosive growth followed by seeming dormancy, overflow followed by drought. Early on, these shifts threw me into an identity crisis. If I wasn't actively creating or selling, was I still an artist? If inspiration wasn't flowing, had God abandoned me?
Understanding seasons changed everything. Just as winter doesn't mean spring will never come, creative dormancy doesn't mean you've lost your calling. Sometimes God orchestrates fallow seasons to deepen our roots, not just grow our fruit. Sometimes, He's preparing us for a harvest we can't yet imagine.
I remember a particularly dry season that lasted months. No matter what I tried, everything felt forced. Instead of pushing through, I finally surrendered. "God, if this is a season of rest, I receive it." In that surrender, the pressure lifted. I spent time studying other artists, reading, walking in nature—filling the creative well without demanding immediate output.
When the creative flood returned, it came with power and clarity I'd never experienced. Those months of dormancy hadn't been wasted; they'd been preparation. My identity as an artist hadn't disappeared during the quiet season—it had been deepening.
Creative Prayer Exercise: Create a visual representation of your creative seasons—perhaps abstract shapes or colors representing different periods. Include both the vibrant, productive times and the quiet, fallow seasons. Thank God for His purpose in each season, trusting that He's always at work.
Prayer: Lord, thank You that my identity as an artist isn't dependent on my current productivity. Help me embrace each season, knowing You're at work whether I see fruit or not. In seasons of abundance, keep me humble. In seasons of dormancy, keep me trusting. Remind me that I'm Your child in every season. In Jesus' name, Amen.
