Greatness: Matthew 14-20

DAY 40 OF 64

George Müller was an evangelist who worked with orphans in the early 20th century. One morning, the orphanage eventually ran out of food for the children. Still, George gathered the children together, and they prayed, thanking God for what He provided for them, even though George knew there was no food.

Shortly after the prayer, a local baker knocked on the door, explaining that he had felt prompted to bake extra bread during the night for the orphanage. Then, a milkman arrived, offering milk because his cart had broken down nearby, and he wanted to avoid it spoiling. That morning, every child ate a full breakfast, reminding them of God’s timely and abundant provision.

We see many examples of faith, dependence, and humility in the Bible. The Canaanite woman demonstrates bold faith and humble recognition of her need, seeking Jesus with her whole heart by touching His cloak. The crowd following Jesus shows dependence, enduring physical hunger to receive spiritual sustenance from Him. These actions align with Luke’s writings: “he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate; he has filled the hungry with good things” (Luke 1:52–53, ESV).

As followers of Christ, we are called to imitate this desperation and hunger for God. Are we seeking Him with faith like the Canaanite woman? Are we relying on His provision like the crowd? Jesus reminds us that He meets our deepest needs and satisfies our hunger for Him.

Let us approach Him with humility and fervent faith, trusting that He is compassionate and able to work mightily in our lives. In every need, big or small, may we turn to Him wholeheartedly, knowing that He provides far beyond what we can imagine.

Today, ponder this: Where in your life do you take for granted what you have? What needs do you have that need to be approached with humility and fervent faith?
