Retirement – Why Are You Still Working? Is That Really God’s Plan?

DAY 5 OF 7

LAZINESS: Is That Why You’re Still Working?

Let’s talk about laziness.

Not the kind where you do nothing all day. Not the image of someone on the couch, remote in hand, drifting through life.

No, let's talk about the sneakier variety. Laziness that shows up as routine, familiarity, and predictability.

The kind of laziness that keeps you working – not because you love the job, or because God’s calling you to stay – but because it’s just easier.

After all, it’s the work you’ve been doing for years. You show up, do what’s expected, get paid, and go home. You don’t have to make any big decisions, learn anything new, or wonder what tomorrow looks like.

This is the kind of laziness where you just don’t have the motivation or the energy to think about making a change. You just don’t feel like it, so you keep clocking in. To keep on doing the same old thing.

You tell yourself retirement can wait. You don’t want to think about new roles, new communities, or new skills. It’s just easier to keep things the way they are.

That’s not strategy. It’s not wisdom, it’s sloth. And it’s not good:

“Anyone who knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, sins.” – James 4:17

Ouch. That hits hard, doesn’t it?

But God isn’t just calling you to keep on keeping on. He’s calling you to step out. To exercise the new freedoms waiting for you so that you can get out there and do good. To move forward. To participate in the next thing He’s prepared for your life. To help build His Kingdom.

And yet… you stay in the same old routine. Not because it’s best – but because it’s easiest. It’s the lazy path. And it’s the path that does NOT align with what God wants for you in this next stage of life:

“We are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” – Ephesians 2:10

Those good works are out there, waiting for you. But they require action. And they might require some change and maybe even some learning. They require giving up your favorite routine and stepping into something that actually stretches you.

When you retire, it might be tempting to coast. To fish, to golf, to relax – and there’s nothing wrong with any of that in its place. But if that’s your only plan, you’re missing the point.

God didn’t bring you this far just to have you sit it out.

He wants to use what you’ve gained – your wisdom, your experience, your availability – for something greater than yourself. He wants to build His Kingdom through you.

That won’t happen if you stay stuck in what’s familiar, or by choosing comfort over calling.

So if you’re dragging your feet because change sounds like too much work – ask yourself this:

What’s that laziness costing me? And, what is it costing God’s Kingdom?

OK, now you know. And now it’s time to move. Not because you have to – but because God has something better waiting.

Don’t let laziness cause you to miss your next chapter.
