God’s Strengthening Word: Being Renewed by the Holy Spiritਨਮੂਨਾ

Introduction
Acts 7:1–22: Stephen is questioned by the High Priest, and he begins his defense in a lengthy speech that recounts Israel’s history. In today’s reading, Stephen begins by retelling the call of Abraham and continuing with the story of the patriarchs and the birth of Moses.
Today’s Key Verse: Acts 7:2b
[Stephen said:] “Before our ancestor Abraham had gone to live in Haran, the God of glory appeared to him in Mesopotamia.”
Reflect
The High Priest’s opening question refers to the lies that Stephen’s opponents bribed some men to say (see Acts 6:13–14 from yesterday’s reading). In response, Stephen recounts and reinterprets Israel’s history, following a pattern found in other parts of Scripture (for example, Nehemiah 9 and Psalms 78, 105, 106). What does his speech reveal about God and his people? Have you ever been a victim of someone’s lies? If so, how did you handle the situation?
Pray
God of glory, I stand on your Word, trusting in your promises. You alone are the God of my salvation, and I thank and praise you for your steadfast love. Amen.
Tomorrow’s Reading
Acts 7:23–34: Stephen continues his speech before the Council.
